The plains zebra is the most abundant and the smallest of the three zebra species. A mountain zebra also has a distinctive dewlap on the throat that looks a bit like an Adam’s apple. It has a gridiron pattern on the rump, and its white underside has a dark stripe that runs the length of the belly. The Grevy’s zebra also has the thinnest stripes, extending all the way down to their white belly on the hindquarters the stripes are vertical until above the hind legs.Ī mountain zebra has vertical stripes on the neck and torso, which graduate to wider-and fewer-horizontal bars on the haunches. Its thick neck and large, round ears give the Grevy’s zebra the most mule-like physique. The Grevy’s zebra is the largest, weighing from 770 to 990 pounds (350 to 450 kilograms) and measuring up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) at the shoulder. No zebra, or other wild equid, has a forelock. In fact, the farther south on the African plains you travel, the farther apart the stripes on the zebras get! The basic form of zebras-a large head, sturdy neck, long legs, a dorsal stripe along the spine and down a tasseled tail, and bristly mane-is universal. Different zebra species have different types of stripes, from narrow to wide. It might seem like a zebra is a zebra, but there are three different species: plains, mountain, and Grevy’s zebras. ![]() Zebra stripes are unique to each individual, and researchers in the wilderness have used zebras’ individual stripe patterns for identification. So, why the stripes? They serve as a kind of protection from predators! When zebras are grouped together, their combined stripes make it hard for a lion or leopard to pick out one zebra to chase. And as it turns out, zebras have black skin underneath their hair. However (there had to be a catch, right?), some zebras are born with genetic variations that make them all black with white stripes, or mostly dark with the striped pattern on just part of their coats. That's because if you look at most zebras, the stripes end on their belly and toward the inside of the legs, and the rest is all white. So what's up with the stripes? Zebras are generally thought to have white coats with black (sometimes brown) stripes. Stripes: White with black or black with white? This is one of the most-asked questions about zebras. When resting at night, zebras lie down while one stands watch to prevent an ambush. Their hard hooves are designed to withstand the impact of their body weight and to run easily over rocky ground. Zebras often trot when moving to new pastures, which is a fairly fast but easy gait for them to use over the long distances they may have to travel. Usually the lead male of the herd, called a stallion, sounds the alarm if danger is spotted and stays at the back of the group to defend against predators if necessary, while the mares (females) and foals (youngsters) run away. ![]() They also have a powerful kick that can cause serious injury to a predator, like a lion, a hyena, or an African wild dog. ![]() They have excellent hearing and eyesight and can run at speeds of up to 35 miles per hour (56 kilometers per hour). Zebras are equids, members of the horse family. Read between the lines, and you’ll discover that the world of the zebra is colorful indeed! They are prey for predators, but they are by no means shrinking violets when it comes to defending themselves. Their life in a herd can be complex, yet they also find safety in numbers. They are sturdy, spirited animals that are a study in contrasts: willful and playful, social and standoffish, resilient and vulnerable. Despite their appearance, zebras aren’t just black and white. ![]() Otherwise, it was quite wet! Because people easily remember names, especially the ones that have been attached to Connecticut’s biggest storms! Occasionally, we get criticized for naming winter storms, but by far most of our viewers love the tradition and find it fun! Certain criteria must be met for a storm to be named. It all began in 1971 with Channel 3 and the Travelers Weather Service. Alfred’s heavy, wet snow caused a record power outage in Connecticut and Blizzard Charlotte dumped up to 40″ of snow in parts of the state. You may remember Blizzard Larry (the Blizzard of ‘78), the big ice storm of December 1973 named Felix, Storm Alfred in late October of 2011 and Blizzard Charlotte in 2013. WFSB/Channel 3 for over 50 years has been naming winter storms, a tradition we’re proud to carry on today. Here are the first 5: Aspen, Birch, Cedar, Dogwood, and Elm. Given our late show of color in the autumn season, we’re going with species or types of trees. We are officially releasing our list of Winter Storm names for the ‘23-’24 season. HISTORY AND CRITERIA FOR NAMING WINTER STORMS… Highs will be closer to the 50 degree mark as we get closer to the end of next week.įirst Alert Chief Meteorologist Mark Dixon with Jill Gilardi Another round of showers will be possible Thursday with a downward trend in temperature continuing. Thereafter, with afternoon clearing temperatures pop into the 60s! Wednesday, we’re forecasting dry weather with increasing cloudiness and temps that peak in the mid-50s. The week starts dry, then showers appear likely through Tuesday morning. Temperatures trend relatively cooler Monday (back in the 50s). This is also a great time to replace smoke detector batteries. Sunday, the sunrises at 6:28am then sets at 4:40pm. Saturday, sunrise is at 7:27 with sunset at 5:41p. We “fall back” Saturday night to enjoy an extra hour of sleep. Keep in mind this weekend is 49 hours in length, as Daylight Saving Time ends (officially at 2am Sunday). While tomorrow features a partly sunny sky (filtered sun at times due to high level cloudiness) and Sunday there will be scattered clouds… our forecast for dry weather over the 2-day period remains! The warming trend continues with highs back above average over the weekend (near 60 both days). Clouds will increase, too, with filtered sunshine by sunrise tomorrow morning. We all bottom out in the 30s again tonight, but any frost will be confined to the NW and NE parts of the state. High temperatures were right near average today, with most making it into the mid and upper 50s!
